The Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad
Stony Valley
Saint Anthony's Wilderness

Stony Valley (or Stoney/Bell's Valley) is part of the second largest roadless wilderness tract in Pennsylvania. It lies in the heart of Saint Anthony’s Wilderness along the abandoned Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad (present-day Stony Valley Rail-Trail). Once home to over 2,000 inhabitants in the mid-1800s, the former towns in the valley contained coal mines, lumbering lands and railroads, that have all long since died out. The valley today, remains one of the region’s most beautiful natural and historical wonders, lost even from the pages of history books.

This website is dedicated to the rich history that has been left by the Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad (predominately in Stony Valley, but also in the other communities along the railroad’s former line), with hopes to teach the present generation about their heritage and how to discover the wilderness for themselves.
